Amanda was born and raised in Houston, Texas, but has called Atlanta home for over 10 years now. Her journey with birth began during her own childhood. When she was 7 years old, she remembers waking up one morning and being introduced to her new baby brother. She thought nothing of it and went right back to sleep.... this is when homebirth became normative for her. From breastfeeding to herbal remedies, the natural approach was always the way to go in her home. During college, the midwifery model of care was introduced to Amanda and she knew this was the way she would birth if ever given the opportunity. When Amanda was ready to have her own children  the norms that she experienced in her childhood were an easy choice because they were options presented to her at an early age. Years later she would even find out that her father (a M.D./family practitioner) was also the medical director for one of the midwives in her community that she had chosen as the midwife for her 1st child. As Amanda and her husband began to grow their family it became more and more clear that what was the norm for her growing up wasn’t the same for other women in her age group and cultural context. Since then, it has been her passion and joy to encourage women, especially black women, to know and understand their birthing options and the power of advocating for themselves and their families.

Amanda has always loved children and helping others. Even as a teenager when people asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, Amanda would alway say, “I just want to help people...”. So, it is only natural that she earned her degree from Baylor University in Psychology and Child and Family Studies. It’s only natural that she has served in different roles throughout her adult life with non-profits, in social service and in education. It’s only natural that she’s served other women as a doula for over 10 years now. And after birthing her 5th (and final ;-)) little one at ABC in 2018, it is only natural that she jumped at the opportunity to join the team here at ABC. Her natural skill sets and experience have given her the tools to be an administrator and manager. As a black woman, a daughter, a wife, and a mother of 5 (with all natural and unmedicated births from her 4’9” frame) she has grown to love the beautiful and life-altering season of pregnancy and birth. Each day she hopes to be a part of supporting and affirming the God-given dignity that all women deserve in their birthing space and journey.

Amanda enjoys sports (both watching & playing), a good healthy debate/exchange of ideas, online bargain hunting, all things arts & crafts, and of course spending time with her husband and 5 kids.
